USS Nimitz Deploys to Caribbean as US-Cuba Tensions Escalate

(MENAFN) The US military confirmed Wednesday that the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group has taken up position in the Caribbean, signaling a sharp escalation in tensions between Washington and Havana.

US Southern Command announced the deployment in a statement published on the American social media platform X, declaring: "The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68), the embarked Carrier Air Wing 17 (CVW-17), USS Gridley (DDG 101) and USNS Patuxent (T-AO 201) are the epitome of readiness and presence, unmatched reach and lethality, and strategic advantage."

The command further asserted that the USS Nimitz "has proven its combat prowess across the globe, ensuring stability and defending democracy from the Taiwan Strait to the Arabian Gulf."

The carrier group's arrival coincided with a significant legal move by the Trump administration, which on Wednesday unveiled criminal charges against former Cuban President Raul Castro over his alleged involvement in the 1996 downing of two civilian planes operated by Brothers to the Rescue — a Miami-based exile organization — in an attack that claimed four lives, among them three American citizens.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly telegraphed that Cuba is "next" following the military operation against Iran, and has publicly asserted that the communist-governed island would fall "soon."

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel pushed back sharply earlier this week, asserting that Cuba holds the "absolute and legitimate right" to defend itself against any military aggression and cautioning that such a move would trigger "a bloodbath with incalculable consequences."
