Mexico Seeks Ways to Support Cuba
Sheinbaum highlighted Mexico’s significant role as a prime source of oil deliveries to Cuba, particularly following U.S. military actions against Venezuela that led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his spouse.
At a press briefing, she emphasized the potential consequences of the U.S. policy, asserting that, “The application of tariffs on countries that supply oil to Cuba could trigger a far reaching humanitarian crisis, directly affecting hospitals, food supplies, and other basic services for the Cuban people. This is a situation that must be avoided through respect for international law and dialogue between the parties.”
According to a media outlet, Mexico’s government controlled oil firm, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), delivered close to 20,000 barrels of crude daily to Cuba over the past year.
Sheinbaum noted that the latest delivery in January was 86,000 barrels, while also pointing out that oil exports to the Caribbean island represent just 1% of Mexico’s overall oil output.
The president explained that her administration is currently reviewing the breadth of U.S. President Donald Trump’s decree. At the same time, officials are identifying possible avenues to help Cuba without exposing Mexico’s economy to U.S. sanctions.
Speaking to reporters, she said, “So, I instructed the foreign minister to discuss this with the United States government, or for them to send the oil themselves. This is an issue of support for the Cuban people.”
